Wayfinder

CALL FOR ART

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUBMISSIONS

The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC), in partnership with Big Read Rapid City, thanks artists for submitting works for Wayfinder, an exhibition at the Dahl Arts Center that explores the intricate tapestry of human experience. Through this exhibition, artists are encouraged to explore themes of navigation, guidance, and the quest for meaning, weaving their unique perspectives into a shared narrative of wayfinding.

Drawing from Andrew Krivak's novel, The Bear, this exhibition celebrates the resilience of the human spirit, the power of nature as a guide and the universal search for meaning and belonging. Whether capturing moments of striking out in a new direction, guiding others on their paths, or seeking a homecoming, Wayfinder will share your journey with our community.

Themes
Navigation:
Intuition, dreams, and spiritual guidance.
Waypoints: Journeys—both physical and metaphorical, from the mundane to the mythic.
The Crossroads: Critical turning points and choices that shape destinies.
The Horizon: Hope, aspiration, and the unknown future.

We received 130 entries from 57 artists. Selected works will be showcased at the Dahl Arts Center in the Lynda K. Clark + Stan Adelstein Gallery from January 24 - April 26, 2025, with an opening reception and book talk on January 24, 2025.

THE BEAR
By Andrew Krivak

The Bear by Andrew Krivak is a novel set in a world where humanity has vanished, leaving behind only one man and his daughter. They live a simple, harmonious life in the wilderness, relying on the land for survival and following the rhythms of nature. They live off the land, with the father teaching her essential survival skills and his understand nature.

After her father passes away, the girl sets out on a journey to honor his wishes. Along the way, she meets a bear who guides and protects her, teaching her important lessons about strength, resilience, respect for nature, and the interconnectedness of all living things.

The book is both a survival story and a meditation on the beauty of the natural world. It encourages readers to reflect on humanity's impact on the planet and the importance of living in harmony with nature. Its poetic language and thoughtful themes make it a powerful, reflective read for our community.
