About the Collection
The permanent collection at the Dahl was established as a legacy for future generations and an asset of the people of the City of Rapid City. The RCAC develops and maintains the collection with a primary focus on works by artists who have influenced, lived and worked in this region. The first donations to our collection were a set of 14 Grace French pieces by the Miser family in 1974. Since then, a variety of artwork has been collected since 1974 with a mission to preserve the work of local artists.
Development of the permanent collection results from the planned collecting goals and financial resources available to the RCAC. In 1976, an endowment of $6,000 was established for the RCAC by the Rapid City Arts Association to facilitate acquisitions for the permanent collection. The Ann Pier Fund was then added for individual donors to contribute to the endowment in subsequent years. Proceeds from the endowment continue to fund collection purchases and care. Financial contributions from donors and grants provide periodic purchases from regional artists. The collection now houses over 300 works by 150 Artists.
