Donated to the RCAC in 2014
The lithograph was generously donated in 2014 by Johanna Meier Della Vecchia, who has since given her consent for the piece to be raffled as part of an initiative to raise funds for the Arts Council’s ongoing operations and the care and growth of its collections. Thus, the piece was recently voted to be deaccessioned from our permanent collection by our Exhibits Committee. While it has served as a unique piece befitting of the western culture of our area, the funds raised through this raffle will be used to better serve local artists right here in the Black Hills.
About the ArtistSalvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí Doménech was born on May 11th, 1904, and lived to the age of 84 before passing in his hometown of Figueres, Catalonia, Spain on January 23rd, 1989.
In his later career, Dalí was renowned for his upturned mustache, long cape, and walking stick which accompanied a boastful ego, all becoming part of his iconic public persona. He often made exclamations such as: "every morning upon awakening, I experience a supreme pleasure: that of being Salvador Dalí" and "when you are a genius, you do not have the right to die, because we are necessary for the progress of humanity." The artist created many graphic works outside of his famous paintings, including prints, etches, and lithographs. The lithograph Caballero was made the same year that the artist promised to purchase the Castle of Púbol for Gala, his wife and lifelong muse, which he did a year later. |
