                                                                          Hands in Clay (adults and teens 12+) w/Melanie Kelly

                                                                          This pottery class is a great starter or refresher because it introduces the basics of working with clay. Students will be taught hand-building methods to make pots sculptures and more. Work with the slab roller to make tiles and clay slab structures.                                                                           Drawing Basics (adults and teens ages 14+)

                                                                          Drawing foundations for beginning skill levels. This class will focus on the basic components of drawing with emphasis on line, shade, perspective and eye/hand coordination. Experiment with pencil, colored pencil, charcoal and more.                                                                           Crochet with a Twist (adults and teens ages 16+) w/Emma Rivers

                                                                           
                                                                          Inspired by the work of Cathryn Mallory and her current exhibit at the Dahl, we will crochet, weave, darn, wrap and twist wire and other alternative materials to create small sculptural forms.                                                                           Weekend Watercolor Workshop (adults and teens ages 14+) w/Kelli Lien

                                                                          Beginning explorations in watercolor. Through discussion, demonstrations and mini projects, students will learn to paint in watercolor. This is a comprehensive introductory class and will cover materials, color, value, textures and techniques.                                                                           Felt n' Stitch (adults and teens ages 16+) w/Emma Rivers


                                                                          Learn the basic techniques of wet-felting in this fun fiber arts class inspired by Cathryn Mallory's current exhibit at the Dahl. Layer, blend and roll wool fibers and watch the magic happen to create fabric pieces. In the second session, use your felt pieces to cut, layer, stitch, wrap and embellish, creating small sculptural forms designed for the novice fiber artist! Some supplies included. Class # SP12310

                                                                          Put on your muscles; we’re tackling the pottery wheel!                                                                           An outlandish painting of your pet, painted by you!                                                                           Artists Toolbox

                                                                          Arts Career Development Series. This eight-session series is for artists who want to pursue art as a career.  You can take them all or only those that best suit you. Sessions are led by successful area arts professionals. Brought to you by the Rapid City Arts Council at the Dahl.

                                                                          Resume and statement writing w/Gina Gibson & Dustin Hinson
                                                                          Sell yourself with words. Your resume explains your technical background and your artist’s statement tells about your work and why you do it. Learn how to put what you do into clear and concise text  that appeals to review boards, schools and galleries. Artists are encouraged to bring existing materials in for review.

                                                                          Grant writing basics w/Barb Evenson & Deborah Gangloff
                                                                          Afraid of writing a grant? In this session you’ll see examples of awarded grants, learn how to outline, gather info and get started on being awarded money for doing what you love. We’ll also talk about finding and maintaining partners in the community as a strategy for expanding your audience and appealing to potential funders.

                                                                          Portfolio creation w/Ray Tysdal & Steve Babbit
                                                                          What should be in your portfolio? This session focuses on promotional materials: your business card, artist statement, artistic résumé and your portfolio as a whole. We will talk about what is included in an appealing portfolio and how to create a package that includes it all. Artists are encouraged to bring portfolio packages along for review.

                                                                          Exhibits and commissions w/ Mary Maxon
                                                                          Getting your work shown is often an overwhelming task. Where and how to apply for exhibits and commissions is the topic of discussion with this session. Learn how to fill out applications, format images and submit portfolios. Participants will receive a list of area galleries and contact information as well as information on upcoming open calls. Get the big picture for launching your career.

                                                                          Photographing your work w/Steve Babbit
                                                                          First impressions of your art are crucial to your success. Learn techniques for shooting your work yourself with a digital camera and with film. Learn how to get rid of hot spots, capture color correctly and black out backgrounds. Class will cover primarily 2D artwork and briefly cover issues with shooting 3D. Live demonstration included. Participants will receive a list of area photographers available for hire to do the work also.

                                                                          Marketing and promotions w/ Gina Gibson & Dustin Hinson
                                                                          Discover how to market yourself and your work. This crash course will equip you with a better understanding of the what, how and why of online tools for marketing your work, staying abreast of your field and connecting to existing and potential clients and colleagues. This session will introduce you to a variety of social media tools such as websites, Twitter and Facebook. Identify the right audience and make informed decisions about what works best for you and your artistic practice.

                                                                          Time management & career planning
                                                                          How do I become a professional artist when I need to work for a paycheck? This session concentrates on examining your career and developing a well-thought-out career plan. Learn how to define your goals, identify strategies for achieving your objectives and developing your career path. We will recommend approaches for getting control of your day, creating work time, and reaching your artistic goals.

                                                                          Art as Income
                                                                          Learn to earn - turn your talent and art into income. Discussion will begin with how and where to sell your original work and setting price points then will continue to product development and merchandising. We’ll discuss the value of creating income from reproductions such as prints, books, calendars, posters, and postcards. Hear what experienced artists have learned through trial and error and pointers from area art gallery retail shop representatives.

                                                                          Life Drawing (adults ages 18+) w/ Marie Curtin 

                                                                          Draw or paint the human form from live nude models with Marie Curtin. This is an opportunity for independent work. No instructors, just an open friendly atmosphere of similarly interested artists. All abilities welcome. Easels, drawing boards, tables, locker storage and wet canvas racks available for use. Bring your own media of choice. Pre-pay for sessions and save!

                                                                          Mat Cutting (adults and teens ages 16+) w/ Victoria Ledford

                                                                          Save money, protect your art and photos and enhance with color. Learn the basics of frame display in this 2 hour matting class. Bring 2-3 pieces of artwork on paper that are approximately 8 x 10" to work with, all supplies included. Includes one free open studio card to continue your work. Advanced lessons on request.

                                                                          Open Studio Cards (adults ages 18+)

                                                                          Pottery wheels, slab roller, work tables, easels, locker storage, drying racks, kiln firings...it's yours to utilize. Open studio is available to artists seeking a space to do independent work. It is preferable if students have taken a class through the Dahl in the medium they are planning to work with, however, new artists may contact Victoria Ledford at 394-4101 x205 or victoria@thedahl.org to schedule a brief orientation. Ages under 18 allowed with a supervising adult. The studio is available anytime during open hours with the exception of scheduled class times. It is suggested that you call ahead to be sure the area is available for use.

                                                                          Education Cancellation Policy

                                                                          Registration is not in effect until payment of class fee has been received. Register in person or by phone with credit card during regular Dahl hours. 25% of the class fee will be non-refundable registration charge in the event of cancellation by the student. A class credit or 75% refund can be given up to 72 hours before the first class date.  Cancellations within 72 hours of the first class date will be non-refundable.
