1st Annual 
Americana Music Festival Songwriting Contest


The Rapid City Arts Council invites all South Dakota songwriters to participate in the 1st Annual Americana Music Festival Songwriting Contest. 

Your song must be about a South Dakota issue, place, or person; be appropriate for general audiences (G-Rated); and no longer than 4 minutes.

The winner will be invited to perform their song in person Friday, September 21, 2012, opening for the headlining performer at the Americana Music Festival at the Dahl Arts Center, Rapid City.

The songwriting contest winner will receive the following prize package:
·  A professional recording session to record the winning song at Fire Station 7 Studios, Rapid City. 
·  Open the Americana Music Festival on September 21st  with a performance of their song
·  A recording of the winning song will be played during an interview with Matt during South Dakota Public
   Broadcasting’s Saturday “On Record” program.

Marnie Cook, Mike Linderman, and Gordy Pratt, three respected local singer/songwriters, have been selected as contest judges.

There is a $10 submission fee per song, limit two (2) songs per person. 
The deadline for submission is midnight, August 15, 2012.



Contest Rules

1. Song must be about a South Dakota issue, place, or person.

2. Song must be G-Rated.

3. Song must be no longer than 4 minutes.

4. Song must be submitted by midnight, August 15, 2012 to be considered.

5. Song must be submitted as an MP3. Song lyrics must be included. Lyric sheet should include the title of the song
    and the date the song was written. 

6. Your personal contact information must be included as part of the submission email but must not be included as
    part of the MP3 file name or appear on the lyric sheet. 

7. Send your submission to songwriters@thedahl.org. REMEMBER: Including your name as part of the MP3
    recording file name or on the lyric sheet will result in disqualification.

8. When the MP3 file and lyric sheet email is received it will be reviewed to make certain it complies with all contest
    rules and criteria. Each song will be given a number in the order of submission. Once submission is approved it will
    be forwarded to the judges. The judges will not be meeting together, and will tally their votes separately. The
    ratings will be returned to the Americana Music Festival Committee and counted to determine the winning song.

9. Submission fee is $10 per song, limit two (2) songs per person. Payments can be made online (above), over the
    phone (605.394.4101 x200) or in person at the Dahl Arts Center, 713 7th Street, Rapid City, SD 57701. If
    paying by check make payable to Rapid City Arts Council.

10. If all the requirements are not met, the song will disqualified.

11. Notification will be announced on Friday, September 14, one week prior to the Americana Music Festival.
