Artists Reception:
Fri, July 18, 5-7pm
Free and open to the public

Artists from the Black Hills
Workshop's Suzie Cappa Center for Art and Enjoyment will display
their work at the Dahl Arts Center July 9-July 26. This year's show
is titled Peace. One of its featured paintings, Doves, is by Black
Hills Workshop Artist of the Year Sara Mellegard. Many mediums are
included in the show, including painting, quilting, and sculpture.
Coincidentally, 2008 marks the 50th
anniversary of the Peace Symbol, a fact the show's organizers didn't
discover until they had already decided on the theme. The symbol was
first used in a protest at an atomic bomb facility in Britain.
This year Black Hills Workshop also
celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. Black Hills Workshop serves
more than 600 people with a variety of disabilities including mental
retardation, autism, brain injury, physical disabilities and others.
The Suzie Cappa Center provides those
it serves with education in a variety of art forms as well as
exposure to the work of other artists.

Adventure from 10am-12pm for guided tours of the exhibit and hands-on
book art.

bookmaking, check out our
Bookmaking Workshop! |
In the unique exhibit, twenty-four artists
joined in artistic dialogue through the creation and sharing of handmade
and altered books. The resulting artwork is not always a traditional
book format.
The work began with one artist created the
basic format for a artwork. The book then passed to the other seven
artists in the group for addition and alterations. The pieces explore a
range of ideas, size and structure.
Be prepared to open drawers, unlock a
padlock, untie threads or turn pages as interaction with each artist’s
book allows for an intimate view into their world, much like finding
treasures in someone’s attic or closet.
Artists in this exhibition come from five
states, including Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia and North
Carolina. The artists include: Becky O’Bannon ▪ Holly Bishop
▪ Helen Brown ▪ Dianne Dorset ▪ Liliane
Francuz ▪ Laura Guinan ▪ Jean Gumpper ▪
Caren Hegna ▪ Helen Hoff ▪ Sonja Huff ▪
Linda Lyman ▪ Florence Alfano McEwin ▪ Sharon
Merschat ▪ Bronwyn Minton ▪ Linda Nix ▪
Amber Battista Olson ▪ Stephanie Jo Painter ▪

career artist since 1979, Corey is a fine-art photographer and print

The first exhibit in the new
education complex space!
Looking for a cool way to warm up this
winter? The Dahl brings a hot art form to its new space. Come check out
our Glassified show, where an ancient art form is presented with a new
and exciting perspective. These four Black Hills area artists have been
creating art that encompasses a variety of glass art techniques,
including flame working, glass blowing, slumping, stain glass and
mosaic. Inspired by their surroundings, their spirituality and unique
self-reflection, these glass artist masters have individually created
work that is guaranteed to further ignite interest in this unique art
form. Be inspired by the soft lines and smooth curves they have coaxed,
through breath and fire, from a seemingly unyielding material.
The art of glass has
ignited intense interest for centuries and the artists who choose this
medium fascinate their audiences. The element of art and heat combined
with chemistry and creativity requires that the individual be both
scientist and creator.
