Kids

Clay for Kids (Ages 5-9) Bugs, bowls & cups for drinking…create anything you can imagine using pottery clay that will be fired & glazed to a ceramic shine. Pinch, slab, extruding & coil methods will be explored, includes the basics of glazing. Dress for mess, all supplies included.

Painting in Style (Ages 7-14) THIS CLASS IS FULL, CALL 394-4101 X200 TO BE PUT ON WAIT LIST Are you a VanGogh... Monet, Picasso or maybe Dali? We'll paint our own rendition of their most famous works. Acrylic on stretched canvas will be the support to this painting & art history class. We’ll create our own masterpieces; learning to mix and layer colors while studying movements & master artists. All supplies included.

Drawing Fantasy (Ages 9-14) Let your fantasy soar in this drawing foundations class. This class will help you develop & strengthen your dragon, castle, pixie & wizard drawing skills. Preschool Classes

For ages 3-5 (and mature 2-yr olds) with Mom, Dad, Grandma or Uncle as a team! Little hands will create wonders in art in these preschool classes. All supplies included. Copy Cat (ages 3-5) Shells, veggies, thumbs, string & bubbles will turn into multiple critters for lots of printing fun. When your done, fold your stamped paper into a hat for wearing!

Hand & Wheel (Ages 15 & up) From form and function to fun & decorative. This beginning to intermediate pottery class will explore both hand-building & wheel throwing techniques. You choose your area of focus. Includes a free five-day open studio punch card.

Drawing (Ages 15 & up) For those who have never drawn, have drawn some, or experienced artists looking to brush up on their skills, this class will focus on the basic components of drawing for all levels of students. Specialty Classes & Workshops


CITYSCAPE PAINTING (ages 16 & up) This class will meet downtown in Rapid City’s Art Alley and commence with a demonstration by Tom Loepp, taking students through the process of creating a cityscape painting. Students will then disperse to a nearby site of their choice to begin work. Tom will visit students in turn and guide them on their own paintings. He will continue over the course of the day to work on his painting and demonstrate further on it as the need arises. Pre-register at the Dahl, meet the day of in Art Alley (located between Main St. and Saint Joseph, from 6^th to 7^th). Bring your own easel and media of choice. Weather permitting.

PORTRAIT WORKSHOP (ages 16 & up) Work from a live model using your own media: acrylic, oil or watercolor. Participants will explore different approaches to portraiture including the nuances of personality, looks and beauty with artists Tom Loepp. Techniques in paint application, brushwork, light and capturing likenesses will be explored. Life doesn’t stand still… capture vitality though alla prima methods to see results in one session. Easels available for use in class.

MAT CUTTING (Adults 16 & up) Learn to cut mats. Borders of color that surround a picture in a frame serve a purpose as well as accent your works of art. Going for Baroque
#SU09400 (Ages 5-12) Mon-Fri, June 15-19, 9am-4pm, $150 ($125 members)
Renaissance music, dance and theatre camp. Sing, dance and participate in a hilarious theatrical stage production of Medieval measure! Children will develop drama and acting skills, create period costume accents, dance a jig and sing bawdy tunes that culminate in a lively festival stage performance on Friday.

Camp Jam

A rock music and graphic arts themed camp for older kids. Karaoke singing, drum circle jams and an American Icon talent showcase on Friday. Create your own marketing packet in between sets: show poster, performance shirt, CD cover art and an on stage photo shoot included. No experience necessary. Join us and we’ll rock your socks off!

Outside the Lines

Creative self expression in a camp week of modern dance and visual arts. The action painting of Jackson Pollock, screaming visions of Munch, and the moods of Van Gogh will lead to our own canvas masterpieces. Lessons in basic modern dance will be inspired by emotions and atmosphere. Dance and art showcase on Friday.

Who Let the Dogs Out?

A pint size art, games and music camp with a fun animal theme for younger children. Paper mache critters, creature masks, drawing lessons and more fill this week of wild fun! Parade and popsicle party on Friday to celebrate with our friends and family.

PRICING: Classes are shown Member / Non-member pricing. Rapid City tax is charged on top of the tuition at the current rate of 6%. For membership information, click HERE.

FINANCIAL AID may be available for 50% or more of the class fee for children in grades 1 - 8, through the Ardath Rypkema Memorial Fund. Application is required. For more information, inquire with office staff at the Dahl Arts Center, 394-4101.

Dahl Arts Center Education Class Policies and Information

Classes have limited space and pre-registration is necessary. Only children enrolled in the class may attend.
Registration is not in effect until payment of class fee has been received. Register in person or by phone with credit card during regular Dahl hours. 25% of the class fee will be non-refundable registration charge in the event of cancellation by the student. A class credit or 75% refund can be given up to 72 hours before the first class date. Cancellations within 72 hours of the first class date will be non-refundable.
A family membership to the Dahl Arts Center allows any member of the immediate family to register for the member fee. An individual membership allows only that individual to register for the member fee. Family memberships to the Dahl are $50, individual memberships are $35.
Please drop off and pick up children in the classroom on time.
All supplies are provided unless otherwise noted.
Students should wear clothes that can get messy.
