The Special Consensus

THE SPECIAL CONSENSUS, a four person acoustic bluegrass band that first began performing in 1975. With several album releases and appearances on the Nashville Network and at the Grand Ole Opry, the group has also won numerous awards and has been on international tours. Their repertoire features original compositions by band members and professional songwriters (such as “Ten Mile Tennessee” and “Margarita Breakdown”) and includes traditional bluegrass standards (songs by Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Jim and Jesse McReynolds, etc.) and songs by artists from other musical genres (such as “Blue Skies” by Irving Berlin). As a result of this musical diversity, The Special Consensus has performed at the most traditional bluegrass festivals and has also been the band to bridge the gap between traditional and progressive bands at more diverse festivals and fairs.

Cedar Hill

Cedar Hill is an all-acoustic, traditional bluegrass band made up of five accomplished musicians and singers who have stayed close to their Ozark Mountain roots. Originally formed in 1967 by Frank Ray and his uncle Richard Orchard, it was genuine, soulful, emotion-packed music that could only be classified as "the real thing". Now, reformed with equally talented members, they are still the real thing.

The Stanleytones

The Stanleytones Bluegrass Band was formed in 1999, when the original members met while attending local jam sessions in the Boulder area. The band was named after the Stanley Brothers, Ralph and Carter, who played throughout the 50’s until Carter’s death in 1964. Having recently finished recording a new album, The Stanleytones’ passion for traditional bluegrass is evident in the their sound, and has made them into what they are today---a classic bluegrass band reminiscent of those early bands of the 50’s and 60’s, with an added repertoire of original compositions comprised of melodic instrumentals and skillful vocal harmonies.

Six Mile Road

Six Mile Road is a young local band, playing high energy bluegrass. The band was formed about 5 years ago and has been popular on the college and coffee house scene. Band members include; Jake Jackson guitar, fiddle and vocal; Trappor Masson banjo; Emilee Masson bass; Dan Cross mandolin. They are also sponsors of the annual t-shirt design contest for the Black Hills Bluegrass Festival.

Jalan Crossland

Jalan Crossland is widely acclaimed by audiences, critics and his musical peers as one of the country’s premier acoustic guitarists.  Along with dozens of regional contest awards, his extraordinary guitar work has earned National Fingerstyle Championship honors in 1997 and the State Championship Flatpick Title in his home state of Wyoming in 1999. Jalan is a talented vocalist, guitar and banjo player, songwriter  and all-around engaging showman.  Jalan performs full-time for audiences across the US and Europe and is a favorite in the Black Hills. Jalan refers to trailer parks, poverty, moonshine and trains in his music. Watching Jalan and listening to his lyrics makes the audience believe that he is channeling a Depression era hobo with a wicked sense of humor. On a serious note, Jalan can be compared to a modern day Woody Guthrie with serious playing skills.
