The Black Hills Bluegrass Festival, the longest running bluegrass and acoustic music festival in the South Dakota, proudly welcomes all music lovers to experience the 29th Annual Black Hills Bluegrass Festival.

The Black Hills Bluegrass Festival Committee of the Rapid City Arts Council produces the only traditional Bluegrass and Acoustic Music 3-day festival in South Dakota. In 2009, the Festival audience will be treated to a unique blend of the finest bluegrass musicians in the country heard in The Martins and Midnight Flight, along with great acoustic music from farmer and story-teller Chuck Suchy, and Celtic music from The GreenMan Band. The Rapid City Arts Council is committed to presenting great acoustic music in a beautiful setting.  As a family-oriented music festival, the event includes 3 great shows, a day of free children’s activities on Saturday, traditional arts and artists on site, musician and dance workshop experiences, and a gospel show on Sunday morning.

The Black Hills Bluegrass Festival started in 1980, finding a permanent home at the Mystery Mountain Resort and Campground in 1995.  That same year, the festival inaugurated a natural amphitheater nestled among the pines, south of Rapid City, South Dakota, which is located just 16 miles from Mt. Rushmore National Monument.  Performers and patrons of this intimate festival in the hills regularly tell us it is one of their favorite festivals because of the friendly South Dakota people and beauty of the venue.

FESTIVAL EVENTS

Friday:  The Annual Black Hills Bluegrass Festival opens with the popular First Night Performer’s Concert on Friday evening. Come out and get a taste of what's in store for the weekend and help us give a South Dakota warm welcome to the Bluegrass Performers!

Super Saturday:  Starting at 8:45, Coffee and rolls will be available for purchase on the Concessions Deck during the workshops. Whether seasoned, novice, or budding musician, you'll want to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from the pros and hone music skills during the Black Hills Bluegrass Workshops hosted by Festival performers on Saturday morning from 9am-12pm.

A Kids Bluegrass Workshop is held from 9-11am on the green—all ages and levels welcome. Workshops are free, but kids should bring their instruments and be accompanied by one adult ticket holder of the festival.  Fiddler’s Three, spectacular local musicians, will teach kids how to make sounds of bluegrass.

Workshop Participants will show off what they’ve learned right before lunch in front of the amphitheatre stage at 11:30am (parents--bring your cameras!)

Lunch is served at the Concessions Deck starting at 11:30am. From Noon to 5pm, see "plein air" artists painting, quilters, instrument making demonstrations and a Children’s Tent with pinwheels, face painting, crafts and games.

Saturday afternoon performances begin at 1:30pm at the Black Hills Bluegrass Amphitheater and continue until 4:40pm.

The Annual Bluegrass Picnic starts at 5pm with a family-friendly menu and price ($8.50 per person for bbq chicken, potato salad, beans, roll, drink and cookie). Other menu items are available at great prices as well (hamburgers, bratwurst, chili dogs, hot dogs, nachos, chips and popcorn).

The Saturday Night Main Stage Show at 7pm rounds out a spectacular day in the pines. This show is always full of high energy and great music. Afterwards, starting at 10:30, Open Jam Sessions (all levels of musicians welcome) and fellowship continue late into the night at three locations in the amphitheater area.

Sunday:  Make sure you plan to see the awe-inspiring Sunday Gospel Music Show in the unmatched beauty of the Black Hills forest from 10:00-12:00 at the Black Hills Bluegrass Amphitheater. This is a must-see performance in the cathedral of pines, (no admission, free-will offering).

Festival Tips:  Bring your energy, love of music and spirit of bluegrass, but leave alcohol, drugs, fireworks, dogs and coolers outside as they are prohibited.

Bring hats, lawn chairs, blankets, sunscreen, bug spray, cameras and cash for concessions, t-shirts, hoodies, CD’s and raffle tickets during the festival.
