AMERICANA SONGWRITERS COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED!
Congratulations to Ted Heeren, of Sioux Falls, winner of the 1st Annual Americana Songwriters Competition!
Ted's song was ranked highest in blind judging scoring, taking first place over 19 other submissions.
Unfortunately, Ted and his band will not be able to join us on Friday evening to perform the winning song,
Sweet Home South Dakota. Such a bummer!
A job well done to all contestants, and thanks for sharing your talents!

ALSO APPEARING - Winner of the 1st Annual Americana Songwriters Competition will kick off the festival with a live performance of their winning song!
Since her arrival in Minneapolis during in 2006 as an 18-year-old, singer/songwriter, Caroline Smith has
become a celebrated part of the Midwest artist community.
Her career began as a solo artist, developing an independent sound which continues to be characterized
by simple chord structures supporting sweet pop vocal melodies. Most recognizable in her music and
the defining quality to her success is her alto singing voice quivering through vibrato, classic and controlled
with the presence of Billie Holiday, Leslie Feist, and Joanna Newsom.
In 2007, Arlen Peiffer (Cloud Cult), bassist Jesse Schuster, and multi-instrumentalist David Earl joined
as the Good Night Sleeps.
In August of 2008, Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps released "Backyard Tent Set.
In 2010, Caroline and Good Night Sleeps bassist Jesse Schuster recorded a CD of live duo arrangements.
The limited edition "Live at the Cedar" was met with enthusiastic acclaim from fans around the states,
and within 6 months of its release the disc was sold out.
Most recently, Caroline Smith and company have completed "Little Wind." The record expands upon
Backyard Tent Set's story-telling whimsy, but shifts from the simplicities of folk to the greater nuances
of modern indie rock. The record will find itself in your CD player on September 20th.

John T. Vucurevich Event Center inside the Dahl along with the Acoustic Stage (Cyclorama)
and all other events on Saturday. Please join us for the afternoon. We'll have cold beer, cool tunes
and the best music in town!

Children/Teen Activities
1 - 2pm: Musical Petting Zoo gives young children a hands on experience with musical instruments, letting
them get comfortable strumming a guitar, tickling a keyboard, sawing on a fiddle. Who knows, they
could discover their inner passion, and perhaps even a music career!
2 - 3pm: Totally Tambourine gets kids dancing and doing! Instructors will help children construct their
own tambourine, and give them all the tools to make it their own totally awesome custom instrument.
Now, all that's left to do is sing and dance!
2 - 3pm: Funky Cool Rock Concert Poster Making activity will let children get creative by designing their
own rock concert or music festival poster!
Vintage Instrument Display - Back by popular demand! Instruments from the late 1800s through
the rock and roll heyday of the 60s and 70s will be on display, along with concert posters.
Adult Workshops - Two exciting workshops will teach the art ofOld Time/Clawhammer Banjo techniques - Vince Janssens: 1 - 2pm
Guitar Finger Style Picking/Alternative Tuning - Greg Howard: 2 - 3pm
Music Festival Poster Design Contest - America has a rich history of amazing rock concert and music
festival posters. It's been one of the most innovative and independent design vehicles in our history.
We are honoring this rich culture with The "Americana Music Festival Poster Design Contest"
Design a poster for the "Americana Music Festival"! Entries will be on display in the Shaver Gallery during
the Americana Music Festival, September 21-23. The exhibit will be juried, and the winning poster will be
printed and sold at The Dahl gift shop. The winning artist will recieve a print of the poster, plus a t-shirt
with their design on it.
