The Goods
bringing art & people together for a great cause
 Art lovers and bargain hunters...mark
your calendars! A super unique seven-day exhibit and fundraising event
begins October 6 at the Dahl Arts Center. Artists are generously
donating new works on 8"x8" canvases, all of which will be sold for $99
in drawings at The Goods Fundraiser!
Adding to the anticipation, the
identity of the artists will remain unknown until the final night when
canvases are purchased and signatures are revealed on the back! For a
cool $99, you might steal away with a Lynn Thorpe,
Mick Harrison, Denise Dubroy or Susan Turnbull, or score new artwork from an
up-and-coming regional artist!
How does it work?
First, preview the work at
the Dahl starting Friday, Oct 6th. Accompanying each painting will be a
registry sheet for a limit of ten names. We encourage you to write your
name on as many canvases as you love, increasing your chances for taking
home a prize. Then be sure to buy your ticket to attend as you must be
present to win! After the 6-7pm fine wine reception, names will be drawn
at 7pm sharp for the paintings with more than one name; those with only
one name will automatically be sold to the lucky person who signed for
it.

Black Hills people looking for a chance to party like fools while
wearing masks are invited to join retro-rock dance band DD and the
Fayrohs, with a special appearance by local fiddle legend Kenny Putnam,
at an April Fool’s Masquerade Ball on Saturday, April 1, in Yesterday’s
Ballroom at the Hotel Alex Johnson.
Belly dancers will mingle and dance through the crowd, a contest will
root out the dancer with the most ridiculous twist, and prizes will be
awarded for both the best and the most foolish costume. To round out the
silliness, event organizers are searching for a juggler, according to
Darla Drew Lerdal, Program and Development Director at the Dahl Arts
Center.
Party-goers are encouraged to wear costumes, and masks will be provided
to anyone who wants one.
The masquerade ball is a new concept for the Rapid City Arts Council,
which raises the bulk of dollars needed to fund programs at the Dahl. A
fall gala fundraiser, traditionally a major revenue source for the Arts
Council, was cancelled when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf coast. “At
the time, it seemed right to step back and let the disaster relief
agencies raise as much money as possible,” Drew Lerdal said. “Now it is
time to par-tay!”
The Arts Council hopes to replace lost revenue with the April Fools Day
event.
The ball starts at 7 p.m. with light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, and
DD and the Fayrohs will take the stage at 8 p.m. Putnam will join the
band for selected tunes throughout the night. “This is a one-time-only
performance” joining Putnam with the band, said Drew Lerdal, who is the
“DD” in DD and the Fayrohs.
Tickets to the masquerade ball are $35 in advance per person or $45 at
the door. Advance tickets are available at the Dahl Arts Center. Seating
is limited to 200. Due to limited space and the fact that this will be
the coolest place to party on April Fools Day, advance tickets are
recommended.
Special admission prices are available for interplanetary visitors, $30;
Olympic Medal Winners, $25; Golden Globe Losers, $15; Portuguese Karaoke
Singers , $10; and Oprah Winfrey $5,000. Special prices not valid
between March 31 and April 2. April Fools!

from the Red Cloud Indian School Collection at Pine Ridge on
display, Central Gallery, Dahl Arts Center
Laura Heit-Youngbird’s work,
currently on display at the Apex Gallery at SDSM&T, is an
exploration into her personal and cultural past. She uses literally
defaced photographs and combines them in richly layered collaged and
mixed media art works that are at once hauntingly beautiful and
powerfully painful. The artist will be doing a gallery talk at noon and
will be present at the exhibit reception on Friday, October 14th from
4-6 pm at the Apex Gallery, SDSM&T. For more information see
http://apexgallery.sdsmt.edu/
Gerald Cournoyer, whose work is now
on display at the Dahl Arts Center, is a Lakota artist currently
living and working in Oklahoma. His work consists of large-scale
colorful abstract paintings that speak of two worlds. Cournoyer
interplays colors, repetition and geometric shapes that reflect
traditional symbolism and beliefs of his Oglala Sioux heritage. He also
uses contemporary surface qualities that evoke inspirations from
modernist painters such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Gerald
combines these elements into a sophisticated personal expression that
can be appreciated for its beauty and symbolisms. The Cournoyer exhibit
is sponsored by Doug & Justine Estes. For more information see
www.thedahl.org/exhibitions.
Featured in the Central Gallery at the Dahl is a unique opportunity to
view art works from many southwestern Native American tribes including
Navajo, Hopi and Apache. The exhibit includes both contemporary and
traditional work from the extensive Red Cloud Indian School Heritage
Center Collection at Pine Ridge. The exhibit is sponsored by
Touchstone Energy. For more information see
www.thedahl.org/exhibitions.
Panel Discussion: Issues and Inspirations: Contemporary Indian
Artists, 7 pm Friday October 14, Dahl Arts Center. Be
challenged to think, wonder and feel something unexpected at this
artists’ panel discussion on contemporary Native American art. This
event will touch on a universal level about the theme of movement in
balance with all of creation and the connections to artists’ relatives
will be orally painted by participating artists. The discussion
features artists Roger Broer, Gerald Cournoyer and Laura Heit-Youngbird,
and will be moderated by Jhon Goes In Center of the First People’s
Fund. This event takes place at the Dahl Arts Center and is sponsored
by the Lane Family Foundation.
