Chuck Pyle
In Concert
The
Rapid City Arts Council presents singer/songwriter Chuck Pyle, the “Zen
Cowboy” at the Journey Museum on Saturday, June 21 at 7:30pm. The
concert is a partnership with the Black Hills Songwriter’s Week-long
workshop held annually in Western South Dakota.
Chuck Pyle has
won high praise from both fans and peers alike throughout an inspired
performance career of over 40 years. When reviewers first gave him the
"Zen Cowboy" moniker, he decided to, as he says, "Always ride the horse
in the direction it's going.”
He blends
infectious melodies with straight-from-the-saddle poetry, quoting bumper
stickers, proverbs, world leaders and old cowboys.
An accomplished
songwriter, Chuck's songs have been recorded by John Denver, The Nitty
Gritty Dirt Band and Suzy Bogguss. Country fans know him best for
writing, "Cadillac Cowboy", recorded by the late Chris LeDoux, and
"Jaded Lover", recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker.
The Chuck Pyle
Finger-Style approach to guitar has distinguished him as a true
original, earning him invitations to teach at such prestigious events as
The Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and The Swannanoa Gathering. His music
has made him a favorite of Bill & Melinda Gates who have had him play at
their home in Seattle.
An excellent
recording artist, he has just released his 10th CD, Higher Ground -
Songs of Colorado.

Black Hills Bluegrass Band
Beginning their
27th year playing music in the area, the band was formed in
1981 to help provide entertainment for the 1st
Annual Black Hills Bluegrass Festival.
Three original
members are still with the band. Doug Thomas on lead guitar and vocals,
Carol McConnell on rhythm guitar, autoharp and vocals and Perry
Washenberger on bass. Pete Wouden has been with the band about 15
years playing banjo and mandolin and singing lead and harmony vocals.
Larry Lashley, an accomplished violin/fiddle player, is the newest
member of the group. He recently retired from teaching in the orchestra
program in the Ft. Collins, CO schools.
The Black Hills
Bluegrass Band plays a variety of music from traditional bluegrass with
three part vocal harmony to “Newgrass”, folk, country and songs you
would not expect to hear on bluegrass instruments. The band continues to
expand their repertoire and with the addition of the fiddle there are
many opportunities for instrumentals and fiery fiddle tunes. Previously
the band has played throughout South Dakota as well as Wyoming, Colorado
and North Dakota. |
