Fall Concert |
Featuring Marty Meyer, Mike Linderman, and Ken &
Cory Tomovick. In the Dahl's Cyclorama room, all tickets $12, on sale
now. It's not officially Winter
until December 21, so the idea of a Fall concert on Friday, December 4
is chronologically correct. With the combined musical talents of Ken and
Corey Tomovick, Mike Linderman, and Marty Meyer, this concerts proves
any time of year is good for outstanding music. Corey Tomovick, event
organizer explains "We have wanted to play a show together and kept
talking about how we should play together someday at the Dahl. Well, we
decided to seize the day and make it happen." The concert will be in the
Cyclorama Mural Room at the Dahl beginning at 7:00pm. "The Cyclorama
room provides a warm intimate setting with great acoustics and not a bad
seat in the house." added Assistant Director of the Dahl, Darla Drew
Lerdal.
Since 2005, Ken and Corey Tomovick have been performing, writing and
recording together. They often bring in their talented friends in the
recording process lifting their music to new heights. Ken's intricate
acoustic guitar work perfectly matches Cory's voice and lyrics. "Whether
the song is telling a story or is an emotional plea for peace, it will
leave the audience just a little richer in emotion and spirit." says
guitarist Ken Tomovick. "Beneath the Surface," their first CD is
testament to their efforts. According to Steve Thorpe of the Rapid City
Journal, Ken and Cory's CD "is about as perfect as the singer/songwriter
relationship can get because Ken and Cory find themselves in service to
the song." This indie couple explores blues, country, folk and a modicum
of advice on parenting skills during their set.
Mike Linderman wowed the Dahl audience a couple of years ago as an
opening act for Norman Liota. Michael uses his music to raise the
standard of beauty and hope in a world that completely misses the good
things. "Yup, I even wrote a song about my dog. What songwriter doesn't
actually want to sing about one of their best friends?" Mike is a member
of the board of Black Hills Songwriters, was a co- organizer and
performer for the Songwriters Gallery workshops and concerts, and works
with elementary schools as a songwriter for the Elder's Wisdom
Children's Song program. He has opened for Nashville songwriters Tony
Arata, Don Henry, Tia Sillers, Mark Selby, Gene Nelson, Angela Kasset,
Rob Crosby, Craig Carothers, Barry Dean, and Michael Johnson. Always
searching for great melodies and messages, he focuses on lyrical
finger-style arrangements and songs from the heart with a touch of humor
thrown in for good measure.
Keyboard player, Martin Meyer is a South Dakota native, schooled in Los
Angeles at the Grove School of Music. A featured singer, songwriter, and
piano player, his style is "smooth and expressive", and reflects a
lifelong love of music. Marty is a respected regional favorite and draws
scores (no pun intended) of fans to his solo shows. Marty said of the
show "The opportunity to play in a concert setting with Ken, Corey, and
Mike was an experience in which I wanted to participate. They are great
people and high-caliber musicians." His debut CD of instrumental piano
music entitled "Great Sky", has earned many glowing reviews and is often
requested on SD Public Radio's Early Morning Classics.
In addition to experience in live performance, arranging, and education,
Marty's portfolio includes studio session work, collaboration on
independent film scoring projects, and most notably his original
keyboard demonstration music for Yamaha Musical Instruments. He
currently resides in the Southern Black Hills with his wife and two
children, and continues his musical endeavors in his project studio -
Great Sky Music.
Tickets for "The Fall Concert" are $12 for the concert and can be bought
in advance or night of show at the Dahl. The concert will be in the
Cyclorama Center at the Dahl Arts Center. The concert is at 7:00pm the
doors open at 6:30pm. For more information call the Dahl at 394-4101 ext

The
Winter Music Series, formerly the January Music Series, is back and this
time...it’s personal! Seriously, this series was designed to fit the
personal music requests from our patrons and friends. This is the first
Winter Concert Series in the new John T. Vucurevich Event Center. As the
newest music venue in town, there are comfy new chairs for 250 audience
members, special acoustic curtains and tiles, access for people with
disabilities, and every seat in the house has a clear line of site to
produce a maximum enjoyment factor.
Sat,
Feb 7 - Willson & McKee: The series kicks off with this incredible
Celtic and acoustic music duo—simply one of the best shows touring the
Midwest. Kim McKee is featured on accordion, hammer dulcimer, guitars, folk
harp, mountain dulcimer, bodhran, plus he tells stories and throws in a
wonderful bit of ceili dance! Ken Willson can be heard playing guitars,
Irish Bouzouki, bagpipes (on occasion), storytelling, and some mean ceili
swing himself. These two performers are not only talented, they could
literally charm the socks off of a Senate subcommittee.
Sat, Feb 21 - Abbey Road:
The
return of the king! Well, almost. Abbey Road is back! The staff at the Rapid
City Arts Council listens to their audiences, and they said “more Abbey
Road!” This fantastic Beatles tribute band is coming to the Dahl to perform
in a theatre setting which just happens to be the best way to enjoy this
phenomenal group. The band has been touring various fairs, special concerts,
events and conventions, and now it’s time to rock the Dahl with lots of
Beatles tuneage! This concert is also our chance to raise $5,000 for RCAC
performance programs with matching funds from Modern Woodmen of America.
Enjoy yourself and double your donation to the Arts Council performance
programs. Paul Peterson will start the show with a set of acoustic Beatles
tunes from 7-7:20.
Sat, Mar 7 - Spooncat Harris:
The series concludes with a new show from the Brothers Hegg (of Spooncat!)
and Hank Harris. These super talented entities combine to present a
rock-based show that uses smoking guitar, fiery keyboards, and blazing
horns. These are hot musicians with a super cool sound. Jeremy Hegg is the
talented keyboard player you may have seen with Acoustic Christmas, Spooncat
or the Jazz Diversity Project. His equally talented brother John, formerly
of jazz/rock fusion group Spooncat and Acoustic Christmas, join South Dakota
music marvel Hank Harris. Voila Spooncat Harris!

Bryan Bowers in Concert
with opening act Ken & Cory Tomovick
Nationally acclaimed
auto-harpist Bryan Bowers will perform a solo concert at the Journey Museum
Theatre on Friday, October 3rd. The concert is presented by the Rapid City
Arts Council’s Bluegrass Festival Committee. Singer/songwriter team Ken &
Cory Tomovick will open the show.
From his modest
beginnings as a street singer, Bryan Bowers has become a major artist on the
traditional music circuit. He has redefined the autoharp and is also well
known as a singer-songwriter. Bryan has a dynamic outgoing personality and
an uncanny ability to enchant a crowd in practically any situation. His
towering six foot four inch frame can be wild and zany on stage while
playing a song like `Dixie' and five minutes later he can have the same
audience singing `Will The Circle Be Unbroken' in quiet reverence and
delight.
For nearly three
decades, Bryan Bowers has been to the autoharp what Earl Scruggs was to the
five-string banjo. He presents instrumental virtuosity combined with warmth,
eloquence, expression and professionalism.
"Bowers is widely regarded as the leading virtuoso on the autoharp... Bowers
also has distinct gifts as a singer and songwriter." —People Magazine
Ken & Cory Tomovick will open the show at
7:30pm. Ken & Cory are regional singer/songwriters who perform an all
original, eclectic mix of rhythm & blues, folk and storytelling songs as a
duo, with Ken on acoustic guitar and Cory on vocals. Cory is also the
president of the organization Black Hills Songwriters and she is the writer
behind all of her and Ken’s songs. Ken & Cory have a CD out called “Beneath
the Surface” which also features acclaimed violinist Kenny Putnam on some
recorded tracks.

Sugar Free
Jazz Quintet
Jazz Masters in Rapid City for One Performance on August 20
The Sugar
Free Jazz Trio will expand to a quintet this August when they are joined by
violinist, Cristina Seaborn of Saint Cloud, Minnesota and vocalist
Sabina of Chicago.
True great
jazz music is a rare commodity in the Black Hills. There are those among use
who know great jazz when it is presented, and the Sugar Free Jazz Trio alone
would certainly fit the bill. However, this summer Rapid City will have the
unique opportunity to hear the Sugar Free trio with two female jazz
professionals producing the Sugar Free Quintet.
Christina
Seaborne is a consummate jazz violinist and performer who lived and taught
in the Black Hills for several years. Sabina sings for several
different jazz incarnations in the Chicago area. Christina and Sabina met
and performed with Mike Reardon when they attended the prestigious
Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Sugar Free
Quintet band leader Mike Reardon handles bass guitar, Terry
Rathbun plays drums, and the young jazz wizard Shawn Parker will
play sax, clarinet and flute.
The combined
line up will perform jazz classics by Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Miles
Davis, and Charlie Parker, recent music by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and
Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as some original compositions.

Chuck Pyle
In Concert
The
Rapid City Arts Council presents singer/songwriter Chuck Pyle, the “Zen
Cowboy” at the Journey Museum on Saturday, June 21 at 7:30pm. The
concert is a partnership with the Black Hills Songwriter’s Week-long
workshop held annually in Western South Dakota.
Chuck Pyle has
won high praise from both fans and peers alike throughout an inspired
performance career of over 40 years. When reviewers first gave him the
"Zen Cowboy" moniker, he decided to, as he says, "Always ride the horse
in the direction it's going.”
He blends
infectious melodies with straight-from-the-saddle poetry, quoting bumper
stickers, proverbs, world leaders and old cowboys.
An accomplished
songwriter, Chuck's songs have been recorded by John Denver, The Nitty
Gritty Dirt Band and Suzy Bogguss. Country fans know him best for
writing, "Cadillac Cowboy", recorded by the late Chris LeDoux, and
"Jaded Lover", recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker.
The Chuck Pyle
Finger-Style approach to guitar has distinguished him as a true
original, earning him invitations to teach at such prestigious events as
The Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and The Swannanoa Gathering. His music
has made him a favorite of Bill & Melinda Gates who have had him play at
their home in Seattle.
An excellent
recording artist, he has just released his 10th CD, Higher Ground -
Songs of Colorado.
