Do you have a work of fiction lurking in a drawer,
filed away on your PC, or simply swirling through your mind? Now is the
time to let your talent shine. Enter the Laura Bower Van Nuys short
story contest sponsored by the Black Hills Writers Group and Dahl Arts
Center during the Mountain Culture Festival. Stories must be less than
5,000 words and include some aspect of “mountain culture” (Black
Hills/mountain setting, western themes, Lakota/Native American themes,
contemporary or historical fiction).
Categories:
Professional—1st $150, 2nd $100, 3rd $50
Amateur adult—1st $150, 2nd $100, 3rd $50
Entry fee: $5 per entry,
Critiques available: $5 each—maximum 2 per entry.
Submissions accepted March 18-April 1,
2008.

The writing community has expressed interest
in writing workshops and lectures. In particular, memoir writing seems to
be an area of intense interest for local writers. For this reason, the
Rapid City Arts Council is pleased to bring distinguished author and poet,
Michael Czarnecki to the Dahl Arts Center for a memoir writing workshop.
If you are interested in participating,
please let us know by reserving your spot. The class is limited to 40
attendees.
The following is an excerpt from Michael’s
website:
Everyone has stories to share and many
people have a desire to write about their life. Wanting to write and doing
so are two different things. Often we get stuck on the immensity of such a
project. This workshop (one or a series) will help to make that desire a
reality.
This workshop will help participants to
decide what to write about their lives using a method I call
"palm-of-the-hand" writing, after the "palm-of-the-hand" stories of Japanese
writer Yasunari Kawabata. After deciding on story possibilities, the method
presented helps focus the writer's energy into completing short individual
pieces about their life.
The whole process is presented to the
group - from generating ideas to describing the actual process of writing a
"palm-of-the-hand" memoir. Future follow-up workshops could possibly be
scheduled if participants are interested.
These workshops have been very successful
in helping people to write extensively about their life experiences -
whether for family members or with an aim to someday be published in a book.

Folklorists Conference Mon & Tues

The
Association of Western States Folklorists is banding together with the
Midwestern public folklorists to hold a joint conference in Rapid City.
After an initial Sunday workshop, the next two days, the groups will convene
at the Dahl Arts Center discussing a wide range of topics, from
apprenticeship programs and new technology, to exhibits and working with
specific cultural groups. The meeting is open to the public and advance
registration is requested.

through her ongoing scholarship in teaching to demonstrate how reading and
building proficient literacy requires a three-pronged approach: the school,
the family, and the library. She also talks about the history of children's
stories, current trends, and gives critiques of particular books and
authors.

Luke Warm Water of Rapid City recently became the first "spoken word"
poet to receive an artist fellowship from the prestigious Archibald Bush
Foundation. He and other nationally recognized poets are appearing at
the Dahl Arts Center for a spoken word "Poetry Slam" on Saturday, August
20, at 7:30pm in the Dahl Center Theatre.
Headline poet Mike McGee of San Jose,
CA was the 2003 National Poetry Slam Individual Grand Slam Champion;
which was a national competition of over 300 spoken word poets in
Chicago. He has toured his "stand up poetry" throughout North America,
covering nearly 80,000 miles in 16 months. Mike does at least half his
best to marry humor with sincerity, and observation with comedy. Luke
says of Mike, "With spoken word, Mike is able to grab the audience,
entertain them, let them into his world, all while expressing some of
his deepest feelings. He does this while making people laugh at him,
themselves and any other animals in the room. Mike likes people and it
shows in his performance. If he's not making you laugh, he's making you
think."
Also performing will be the 5 members
of the 2005 Denver Poetry Slam team; Ken Arkind, Ian Dougherty, Katie
F-S, Paul Lipman and Soweto.
The Denver team finished 2nd out of 69
teams competing in the National Poetry Slam competition in St. Louis in
2004; three of those members are returning on the 2005 Denver team. The
2005 National Poetry Slam competition will be held in Albuquerque on
August 10-13.
Luke Warm Water explained some
misconceptions of the "slam" part of the event." What exactly is "Slam
Poetry?" he said. "Perhaps it conjures images of drive by shootings and
violence—‘au contraire' it is nothing of the sort and quite opposite.
Simply put, Slam Poetry is 'poetry of what you're saying and how your
saying it.' It is poets performing much like theatre, memorized and
highly energized. Be prepared to enjoy poetry like you've never heard
before, performed by 6 visiting poets that will make you laugh, cry and
make you think."
This is event will be hosted by local
Rapid City spoken word poet Luke Warm Water. The event is in the Dahl
Theatre located at 713 7th Street in Rapid City.

Is your inner child longing to write a children’s book? If so, this is the
seminar for you. Nancy Veglahn, nationally known children’s book author, with 14
published children’s books to her credit will give a 90-minute seminar on
developing, writing and publishing your stories. The seminar is free to the
public. This seminar is in conjunction with our annual Readiatrics Book Drive
concluding event and is supported in part by the South Dakota Humanities

Readiatrics
Book Drive Begins March 5
Readiatrics is a
yearly book drive supplying new and used books in good condition for children in
family or health crisis in the Rapid City Area. This year the Readiatrics Book
Drive donates books to Youth and Family Services and the many resources this
program provides for area parents and children. The Cultural Affairs Committee
of the Chamber of Commerce, Borders Books, Black Hills Corporation, Literacy
Network, Prince & Pauper Bookstore and the Public Library are teaming up to
collect books for the 2005 book drive. The 2005 drive benefits Youth and Family
Services in Rapid City.
Learning to read
is hard work for children. Parents can help their child become a reader, but to
accomplish this important task children need books in the home. This is where
Readiatrics steps into the picture. Over the last five years, Readiatrics has
raised thousands of new and gently used children’s books for children to take
home and call their own. Readiatrics is founded on the idea that literacy starts
at home. This means providing books that do not have to be returned to a library
or a school. “I learned that children needed books and I knew where to get them.
I believed I knew where to find LOTS of children’s books. So I asked parents,
grandparents, children, teachers and business people to clean out their closets,
basements, and children’s rooms to donate good used books.” Said Readiatrics
organizer Darla Drew Lerdal “Who wouldn’t love to do something great for kids,
donate to a first-rate cause, and clean up their house at the same time?”
Drop locations are – The Dahl Arts Center,
Borders Books and Music, The Public Library, KOTA Offices, Just Jymnastics, the
Literacy Network and the Arts Resource Center. Books are collected March 5
through April 30. The book drive will donate the collected books to YFS during
as short presentation at the Dahl, during the planned Free Family Arts Day on
April 30th at 1:30pm.
