A Picture is Worth a
Thousand Words |
|
Have you ever wanted an opportunity to
let the world see what a real South
Dakota rancher looks like? This is your chance! We have all seen movie
and TV ranchers. Do they seem like you or ranchers you know? Probably
not, so please be part of this important project with images of REAL
RANCHERS in South Dakota. Artist Carl Corey is coming to the Dahl to
take pictures of ranchers, ranch couples and families for a new book. If
you are not a rancher, but know someone who might be interested, please
encourage them to come in for a portrait. We have time for 40 ranch
folks to have a portrait. Call us today!
Be part of a visual arts project that allows people to see the real
people of South Dakota, the hardworking, often isolated, ranchers that
feed the world and add so much to the independent lifestyle of South
Dakota.
Not only are you part of a Ranch art project,
but you receive a copy of your portrait for free! There is no free
lunch, but in this case, you get a world class photo.... no strings
attached. |

Why |
The ranching lifestyle is in transition.
Many of the old Ranchers in the book have passed away and the transition
continues. While those who make up the rancher demography may not
realize it, this demographic is quite small, unique and substantive to
American culture. Other Americans need to know about these people and
are interested in them. While it takes some courage to face my camera I
call upon their sense of pride, responsibility and commitment to a way
of life to ensure it is not forgotten. --Carl Corey |

Rancher: Photographs of the American
West, a collection of striking photographs by Carl Corey will be
on display at the Dahl Arts Center, 703 Kansas City St, from January 18
February22, 2008. Most of the photographs in this exhibit were taken
in the Red Owl and Enning areas. The exhibit opens with a public
reception for the artist and poetry reading by Red Owl area rancher,
Robert Dennis, on January 18, 5-7pm.
A book of the same title, published by
Bunker Hill Publishing will be available for purchase and signing. The
photographs in the book are accompanied by the poetry of South Dakota
rancher
Robert Dennis, with an introduction by
respected writer, editor, poet, and ranchwoman
Linda Hasselstrom.
In 1996 I set out to find a place that
maintained an identity that could be uniquely defined as the American
Westa place where I could simply point my camera and take its picture.
I found it on the ranches of the western Dakotas.
The photographs in this series document the
steps of a journey that spanned five years. There are pictures of
land. There are pictures of people: proud, honorable, very American
peopleindividuals whose land, lives and lifestyle exemplify and define
what was and continues to be the American West.
