Our Green Future
Talk, Listen, See...Exploring Grassroots
Green in Rapid City
Sat/ March 20, 2010
Noon to 3pm
Green Future Event Promises Interaction with Green
City Task Force Plus Family Fun
As children watch a puppet show, meet the authors of a “green” children’s book
and try lots of “green” activities, adults can interact with members of Rapid
City’s Green Sustainable Cities Task Force (GSCTF) at The Dahl Art Center on
Saturday, March 20.
“Our Green Future” from noon to 2:30 p.m. offers both family fun and serious
grass roots engagement about Rapid City’s future. There is no admission fee.
Suzanne Martley, chairperson of GSCTF and Friends of Rapid City Parks, says,
“Care of the environment is what we all want. This isn’t just for us; it’s
really about a sustainable place for Rapid City’s children.” Friends of Rapid
City Parks and Democracy in Action cosponsor “Our Green Future” along with the
Dahl.
Children can enjoy their own version of the “Our Green Future” event. The
mother-daughter team of Mollie O Krafka and Heather Krafka Rederth read from
their children’s book. Hands-on activities in the Lien Interactive Children’s
Gallery exhibit will engage them in gathering their own information and asking
their own questions. Butterfly Puppet Theater with Sue Hey and Leonard Running
performs “The Three Sillies: A Tale of Waste in the Land of Gotalot” several
times after 12:30 p.m.
Eight tables in Events Center will spotlight exhibits and opportunities for
conversation about the Green City subcommittees: Education, Water, Recycling,
Energy, Land Use, Transportation, Local Food, and Natural Assets (parks,
wildlife, etc). City Council members Aaron Costello and Patti Martinson will be
available for listening and conversation about the Green Sustainable Cities
initiative.
Local high school students and Donna Robinson, Recycling Facilitator for the
Rapid City Schools, plan displays and activities.
The afternoon event concludes with a recycled art fashion show by Black Hills
State University art students at 2:30 on the events center stage. See a
newspaper dress, paint chip skirt, leaf bodice, a Mylar sunscreen jacket, a beer
can suit plus many more unique fashions at this lively runway event sponsored by
Fierce Modeling Agency, Planet Hair, Black Hills State University and the Rapid
City Arts Council.
Snacks, including cheese by Black Hills Milk and buffalo hors d'oeuvres by Jill
Maguire of Wild Idea Buffalo Company, will be available along with music by
students from Black Hills State College University.
“Plain View; the Art of Tracy Linder,” the current Adelstein and Clark gallery
exhibit, features installations by the Wyoming sculptor. Linder‘s work suggests
animal, plant, human and machine in relationships, a thought-provoking
combination for the grassroots environmental discussions expected throughout the
art center on March 20.
Our Green Future is the third of a three-event series. Democracy in Action and
Friends of Rapid City Parks are co-sponsoring the series with The Dahl as a way
to encourage more citizens to join the conversation about creating a sustainable
Rapid City.
